Team Up Against Hunger

Food Recovery

Feeding More By Wasting Less

The U.S. Department of Agriculture estimates that over one quarter of all
food produced are wasted. This would equal 96 billion pounds of food. If only
5 percent of the 96 billion pounds were recovered, that quantity would feed
4 million people each day for a year.

In recent years, there has been growing concern about hunger, resource
conservation and the environmental and economic costs associated with
food waste.

The primary goal of SSCAC’s Food Recovery initiative is to collect safe and
wholesome food donated from commercial sources to meet the nutritional
needs of the food-insecure on the South Shore.

SSCAC’s partner schools are currently:

  • Restaurants/Food Retailers
  • Food Manufacturers
  • Farmers/Farmers Markets
  • Supermarkets
